Season prepares to kick-off

The new Electric Ireland Northern Ireland Women’s Football Association (NIWFA) season will kick-off on Monday.

Forty-five teams across six divisions were due to get the 2020 campaign underway back in April but that was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Now 35 teams will play in five re-structured divisions, each playing a round-robin league competition, starting with Ballynahinch vs Dromara Village on Monday.

In addition, rather than six divisional cup competitions, there will be one overall NIWFA Cup for 2020, with matches expected to run until mid-October.

NIWFA Chair Valerie Heron said: “We were very pleased to see the great work clubs carried out in their local communities and how they interacted with their players through recent challenging times.

“We are also very proud of the front-line workers who are involved in the NIWFA family.

“Now we are looking forward to getting back to matches, played in a good spirit of sportsmanship, while keeping everyone safe and in line with the protocols outlined in the Irish FA’s ‘A Return to the Everyday Game’.

“We know the clubs are looking forward to competitive football after such a long break, but there are constraints around floodlit pitch availability and spectators, and concerns over travel costs.

“The NIWFA appreciates the continued support from the IFA and our sponsors Electric Ireland, even more now than ever.”
