Northern Ireland 2 - 1 Slovakia (World Cup Qualifier)
[Match
report: UEFA.com]
"Furness
fires Northern Ireland"
Slovakia's
unbeaten start to Group 7 was ended at The Showgrounds in Ballymena
as Rachel Furness fired Northern Ireland to victory.
Slovakia
had won their opening two games, including a 2-1 triumph against
a Romania team who would go on to defeat the Irish 3-2 in their
only game to date. However, Alfie Wylie's side turned the formbook
on its head, and never looked back after taking the lead in the
second minute through Lisa O'Neill.
Katarina
Dugovicova levelled on 35 minutes before Furness, also on target
in Romania, sealed victory for Northern Ireland. This tight pool
looks like going all the way, with the winners advancing to a
play-off for the right to seal promotion to the upper tier of
European women's football, and possibly the runners-up too.
