31.07.05 Scotland 2 - 1 Northern Ireland (Friendly)

Northern Ireland's women put on a valiant display against an experienced Scottish team currently ranked 29 in the world. Played at McDiarmuid Park, Perth, the official national base and 'Home of the Scotland Women's 'A' Squad', the fixture offered both teams a chance to test their current squad ahead of upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.

The game opened at an impressive pace, with Northern Ireland having several early chances on the Scottish goal. Against the run of play, the Scots gained a free kick on the edge of the Northern Ireland penalty box, which their captain Michelle Kerr managed to head home in the 17th minute. Undeterred, Wylie's team continued to push forward and several times came close to finding the equalising goal.

After the restart, a momentary lapse in concentration by Northern Ireland's defenders allowed Megan Sneddon to score Scotland's second goal. Scotland continued to push forward and some resolute defending and outstanding saves by Emma Higgins spurred the girls in green on. Northern Ireland continued to counter-attack and now growing in confidence, started to play some fantastic football, despite the two goal deficit. In the 83rd minute, the girls were rewarded for their hard work and endeavour when Lynne McFrederick curled a free kick into the penalty box, which Helen McKenna volleyed into the back of the net. Northern Ireland continued to pressurise the Scottish backline right up to the final whistle, with Sarah McFadden narrowly missing the goal in the 92nd minute.

Commenting after the game, Alfie Wylie was delighted with his team's performance. "The fact that we finished the match in Scotland's half demonstrated our relentless attitude. Several years ago, this team would have just folded if they had conceded two goals. However, this is a new era and a new team, and they all showed determination and passion in their performances here today. I am delighted with the progress we are making", said Alfie.

Northern Ireland will now be looking ahead to their first World Cup qualifying game against Romania on the 29th October 2005.
