Champions 2011

Glentoran/BU finished their magnificent season with a 7-2 win over Fermanagh Mallards and whilst the league title was already in the bag, it was another example of clinical finishing, resolute defending and hunger for possession which has been the features of Glens/BU statistics busting season

Both Teams Celebrate With Glentorans Aubry Ralph

Played 14, won 13, lost 0, drew 1, 64 goals scored 4 conceded. These consistently high standards rightly see them crowned NIWFA Premier League Champions 2011.

Their manager Cheryl Lamont interviewed prior to the celebrations kicking off said

“I am so proud of all the players and what is great about this team is that it is a perfect blend of youth and experience. With players such as Ashley Hutton N. I captain, Kelly Bailie the most capped player for N. Ireland and our own club captain Lyndsay Corry in our defence, it is rightly the meanest defence in the League. I am really pleased for Alice Harkness our young goal keeper who came in from Coleraine this year has been immense in her first season. Our midfield which includes N.Ireland internationals Nadine Caldwell and Demi Vance and Jess Doran who works tirelessly for the team secures lots of possession but more importantly they have the skills to turn possession into chances and three of our midfield players are in the top ten list of league goal scorers.”

As for our forwards, what can I say when you have a player like “Shorty” O’Hagan who has notched up 25 goals.

Whilst these are the players who many notice it is all the other pieces which makes the team click, Rose Todd who has just returned from a year out with injury, the unsung heroes in the team who work so hard and the young players coming through from the Reserves who also won their League title. Their captain Maggie O’Hanlon also picked up that trophy last night.

However all at the Club are very much aware that the season is not over with 2 cup finals still to play and the IFA Cup still up for grabs, it is time to refocus on the next game which is the Reserves final league match on Thursday night again at Billy Neill.
