1st Bangor Team
Their progress, whilst not as galactic as other teams, has been pleasing and a credit to the mantle of ladies football generally. Reaching the Divisional Cup Final for the third successive year, an Irish FA Cup Quarter Final appearance, and a chance to progress to Division 1 via the play offs, have demonstrated the continuing improvements the club are making year in, year out.
The core of established 1st Bangor players was augmented this year with an influx of talent, bringing some much needed experience and flexibility to a relatively small squad. The defensive backbone of Lauranna Baine, Kirsty Legge, and NI Internationals Sarah Campbell (2 goals) and Ashley McBride (2 goals), was re-enforced with the irrepressible Becky Dickson who always plays with a smile on her face no matter the circumstances. She also managed a goal this season, making it a memorable year for her.
The clubs other international, Holly Campbell, was her usual indomitable self, contributing 4 goals to 1st Bangor’s’ goal tally from defence. She is an impressive player with a big future, coveted by many of the big clubs in the league. We hope she stays with 1st Bangor and continues to add to the team’s success. A special mention should also go to Nikki Jackson; she played with passion and verve throughout the season and is a marvellous prospect for the future.
In midfield the usual, but ever reliable and talented suspects of Sophie Tazzioli & Jane Patton (3 goals) combined with the improving Vicki Patterson, Kirsty McConaghie (1 goal), Emma Pyper (4 goals) and Danni Wilson (2 goals). Danni punches well above her weight and proved invaluable during combative clashes in the centre of the park. Leah Smyth chipped in with 2 early season goals, and the baby of the squad, Abbie Hull, never gave up running, giving a 100% whenever asked.
Up front Jordan Baine bagged 3 goals but could have easily doubled that with better luck. Claire Withers was lightning fast, supremely fit, and weighed in with two hat-tricks, one against Ballymoney when things looked very bleak. Last season’s top goal scorer Shona Hewlett returned to the team late on, but has continued to work hard in trying to regain her sharpness, accuracy and match fitness.
With Shona’s prolonged absence, the main goal scoring effort was focused on Hannah Sheffield. With 21 goals from all competitions, this diminutive striker proved her effectiveness with an excellent campaign averaging over a goal a game. Her consecutive double strikes against Portadown and Cappagh helped hoist the team into a play-off position. Her performances this year will help dispel any lingering doubts coaching staff have regarding her best position and prowess in front of goal.
Additionally, thanks must also go to the following; squad members Karlene McBride, Mollie Moore and Joanne McMahon for their contributions this year; parents, friends and relatives who supported the club so resolutely during long evenings and even longer journeys to away games; and to long term injury hit squad member Terri Hull who we hope will be fully fit soon.
Only two games now remain. With a commanding 3-1 lead from the first play-off leg at Tollymore, 1st Bangor look in good shape to progress to Division 1 for the 2012 season. The 2nd home leg is on 19th August at The Drome Stadium, Newtownards.
In the divisional cup final 1st BL meet NIWFA Division 2 “darlings”, Valley Rangers, who have been practically invincible all season. However, with a complete and fully fit squad, 1st Bangor believe they have a chance of spoiling Valleys double aspirations and that it will not simply be a case of the Rangers turning up for the finale on the 29th August.
Plans for 2012 include cementing our place in the league and the community, adding an Under 14 squad to the club, and continuing to promote ladies football locally. The club enjoys good relations with the local council and contributes regularly at Sports Development Committee meetings. This is an exciting time for sport in the Ards area and 1st Bangor Ladies hope to be integral to any future development.
Underlining all of this is will be the clubs continued commitment to its principles. Playing the game for pleasure and enjoyment; playing the game in the spirit that it is meant to be played; encouraging fair play, friendship, passion and endeavour.
Well done and good luck 1st Bangor Ladies.
