YMCA took a major step to securing the NIWFA Davisons Frudles Championship title when they beat fellow title contenders Donegal Celtic comprehensively 4-0 at the YMCA Grounds on Monday night.
YM knew that victory over the “wee hoops” would once again put them top of the table by one point over Cliftonville and they set about their task in impressive style.
YM put DC under pressure from the whistle playing some very attractive football and deservedly took the lead on the quarter hour mark when Laura Nicholas crashed home a stunning strike from outside the box. Ten minutes later, YM went 2-0 up when Avilla Bergin scored directly from a corner kick for the THIRD time this season!!
DC went close through centre forward Strain but young defender Rachel Kivlehan blocked her shot brilliantly to maintain YMs lead at the break.
YM continued to dominate in the second period with Aine Mc Keever and Kendra Mc Mullan pulling the strings. Mc Mullan scored YMs third goal mid-way through the half in her final home game before she leaves for the USA to join Mc Keever on a 4 year Soccer scholarship and Mc Keever completed the scoring near the end heading home a McMullan corner to make the final score YM 4 v 0 DC.
YMCA now have three league matches left against Downpatrick, St Mathews, Belfast and Limavady Ladies who currently occupy the bottom three places in the league and should YM win these games the league title will come to Drumahoe for the second time in three years.
