YMCA edge closer to league title

The Championship league looks destined for the North West of the province for 2011

YMCA Ladies continued their quest to land the NIWFA Davisons Frudles Championship title by defeating Downpatrick on Wednesday night. YM dominated from the start but Downpatrick put up spirited resistence until eventually after 25 minutes Seanna Meehan broke the deadlock with a superb volley after the keeper had parried her initial effort.
However, 10 minutes later Downpatrick scored an equaliser which stunned YM. YM continued to press forward playing some superb football and regained the lead ten minutes before the break when Aine Mc Keever smashed home a Kendra McMullan corner. Aoife Curran scored a third goal and Mc Mullan then added a fourth on the stroke of half-time to make it 4-1.
The pattern continued after the break and Mc Mullan scored number five before Mc Keever scored the goal of the game with a fantastic strike from outside the box after good link up play with Hannah Kilgore.
Downpatrick scored a consolation goal five minutes from time but Mc Mullan scored number 7 for YM to complete her hat-trick and finish her season in style as she now heads to the USA to take up a Soccer Scholarship at Providence University, Rhode Island.
YM now have two league games left and if they can win those, the league trophy will be back in the North-West.
