YM back on track

Must win game for YMCA results in them heading back to the top of the table

After YMCA’s disastrous defeat against Davisons Frudles Championship rivals Cliftonville last week at Solitude, the Drumahoe based girls faced a difficult match against Dromore at the YMCA Grounds which became a “must win” after last weeks defeat handed the Belfast Reds the initiative in the title race.

YM started the game on the front foot and had efforts from Kendra McMullan, Mairead Mc Cann and Avilla Bergin all narrowly missing the target in the opening quarter of an hour. However, Dromore stunned the home side when they took the lead on the 20 min mark with a headed goal.

YM however continued to play their passing game and Mc Mullan saw her shot graze the Dromore post and Mc Cann was foiled by the Dromore keeper. On the half hour mark YM were awarded a penalty when Mc Mullan was pulled down in the box and she duly converted the penalty to level the scores.

Five minutes before the break Mc Mullan scored her and YM’s second with a cool finish to make the score 2 v 1 at the break.
Dromore pressed in the early stages of the second half and Seanna Meehan produced a wonderful fingertip save to preserve YM’s lead. Midway through the half YM went 3 v 1 up when Aine Mc Keever cracked home a shot from the edge of the box and this was followed up by a fourth goal when Avilla Bergin scored directly from a corner to seal the three points.
This was a very impressive team performance from YMCA which puts them back on top of the table and keeps the pressure on Cliftonville on the championship run-in.

The Reds know that even a draw in any of their final six matches will once again hand the initiative to the Drumahoe girls and Dromore and Donegal Celtic will undoubtably have a say in where the league title ends up as their results against YM and the Reds will be crucial come mid August.
