Derry City Ladies cemented their place at the top of Davisons Frudles Division One with a less than convincing win against a determined Portaferry team who on this performance should be capable of moving up the table.
The game started with Derry in control and created a few chances that on another night would have taken and put the game to bed. With Claire McKenna covering every blade of grass on the pitch for Portaferry the Candystripe ladies just couldnt find a way through despite the best efforts of Player of the match Demi Leigh Fitzpatrick and Aiveen Lavery whose rampant runs from full back where causing all sorts of problems.
Going in all square at half time the Derry management asked some severe questions of the ladies and it took a few minutes of the second half for the ladies to send their reponse.
With Captain Amanda Heaney playing the link up role well and picking out an exquisit ball to release the now in form McBride who coolly slotted home when one on one with the keeper. This was the breakthrough the ladies needed and it was to be all one way traffic from here on.
Derrys second came from a great ball played in by Niamh Connolly who was asked to play on the left wing picking out the ever impressive Mckinley who fired home an unstoppable shot to give the candy stipes the breathing space they needed.
Next up after some great work from Lavery ws a clear penalty and McBride stepped up to score her 9th goal in her last 4 matches.
Derry were later denied what looked a dead cert penalty when Heaney cleverly broke and was taken down when 1 on 1 with the keeper but the referee decided there was no foul.
The game finished three nil and the Derry ladies winning streak in the league continues having gone all last season undefeated and now six games in this season are still yet to drop a point
Next up is the second round of the IFA Cup against Blackieville Monday the 6th June at prehen playing fields All support gratefully appreciated
