U15 team win Bob Doherty International Tournament

THE 2011 Under 15 Bob Doherty International Tournament was deservedly won by Northern Ireland with three comprehensive wins over Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

In the opening game Noel Mitchell’s side beat Scotland 2-0 with goals from Aoife Curran and Katelyn McKane; this was followed by a 2-0 win over tournament hosts Wales with goals from Carragh Milligan and Aimee Mackin.

And in the final game against the Republic of Ireland, the girls maintained their 100 per cent record in the tournament with a penalty from Katelyn McKane and goals from Chloe McGlade and Amy Mackin giving the Northern Ireland girls a 3-1 win.

As recognition of the girls’ success in the tournament, the Irish FA hosted a presentation evening in Dunadry Hotel.

The event was attended by all the girls and their parents as well as Northern Ireland manager, Nigel Worthington; Irish FA Chief Executive, Patrick Nelson; Chairman of the Coaching and Development Committee, Alan Willis; Chairman of the Women’s Committee, Roy Cathcart; NIWFA Chairperson, Elaine Junk and National Women’s Coach, Alfie Wylie.

During the evening everyone enjoyed a buffet dinner and a presentation slideshow which highlighted and celebrated the girls’ achievements in the tournament.

And following on from the tournament seven players from the squad have been invited to come and train with the Northern Ireland U17 squad.

All the players did themselves and their country proud and the success of the U15 team clearly shows that girls’ football in Northern Ireland is continuing to go from strength to strength.

Well done to the Northern Ireland U15 girls!
