Under 14 winners Cappagh
Having claimed the Dale Farm U14 National League title last week Cappagh Spurs went into the Tesco Cup Final against Lisburn Ladies as firm favourites. Cappagh dominated play from kick off and after 15 minutes were one nil up through Lyn Somerville who blasted a shot from the edge of the penalty box past Jessica Poots in the Lisburn goal. Five minutes later Chloe McGlade made it two nil when she raced onto a through ball before taking it around Poots and slipping it into the net from the tightest of angles. McGlade got her second of the game on 28 minutes when she took the ball around two players before blasting it into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
Lisburn Ladies started the second half brightly and scored within minutes of the kick off. Striker Courtney Poots took advantage of a misplaced back pass, managing to get to the ball first before slipping it under Cappagh goalkeeper Jacqueline Burns to make the score 3 – 1. Spurred on by the goal Lisburn continued to play some good football with Annie Timoney executing some brilliant passes from the centre of the pitch. Marshalled by centre half Naomi Morton the Cappagh defence stood strong and managed to thwart any potential goal scoring opportunities. Cappagh ended any hope Lisburn had of coming back into the game when Sara Ewing added a fourth goal with 15 minutes left on the clock. Final score Cappagh Spurs 4 – 1 Lisburn Ladies.
Speaking after the game Cappagh Spurs manager Michael McGlade said,
“We are so proud of the girls today. They were outstanding and have been all season. The club are very proud to be going to Birmingham to represent Northern Ireland in the UK Home Nations Tournament and hopefully we will do the country proud.
