Serbia v NI

Can our girls finish a fantastic 3rd in their qualifying group on Wednesday night?

SERBIA 0-0 NORTHERN IRELAND
Release Date: 21/08/2010

NORTHERN Ireland’s senior women’s team produced one of their greatest results to hold opponents Serbia to a scoreless draw in their latest Women’s World Cup qualifier in Pozarevac.

Despite coming under intense pressure at times Alfie Wylie’s side held on to thwart their higher ranked opponents.

But it was by no means all one way traffic.

Indeed, Simone Magill and Helen McKenna tested the home goal in the first half while Alison Smyth, Alexandra Hurst and Sarah McFadden all came close after the break.

Northern Ireland: Higgins, Caldwell, Vance, McDowell, Nelson, Hutton, McKenna, Turner, McFadden, Magill, McGuinness subs Fagan (not used), Armour (not used), Nicholas (not used), Hurst (replaced Magill 46), Furness (replaced McKenna 81), Smyth (replaced McGuinness 53), Bergin (not used)

The girls can still finish third in their group if results go their way on Wednesday night when they welcome Croatia to The Oval (kick-off 7:45pm), a side they defeated in Zapresic in the opening game of the series thanks to a first-half Rachel Furness goal.

Admission on Wednesday is £2, so why not come along and cheer on the team as they conclude their campaign.
