Newtownabbey Strikers FC’s, Stephen Calvert, received an unsung hero award at the 3rd annual Football For All awards ceremony that took place, with kind permission of Belfast City Council, in Belfast City Hall on Saturday night.  The evening sought to reward and recognise those volunteers who use football as a hook to promote good relations.

Football For All Ambassador, Colin Murray who hosted the event said, “With continued support from the EU and Belfast City Council I am delighted to be hosting my third annual Football For All Unsung Heroes Awards Night. The Football For All Unsung Heroes Awards Night has become a very prestigious event and kept its focus on rewarding those people who give so much of their free time to Football to improve the community”.

Stephen received his award from sporting legend, Angela Platt, who has played 75 times for the Irish Hockey team and has also represented Northern Ireland in football. Angela said, “Stephen really deserves this award for his commitment and vision promoting Women’s Football”.

Belfast Lord Mayor, Naomi Long, added, “As the IFA’s Football For All Political Champion and a member of the IFA Football For All Advisory Panel, I am delighted to be able to support this event. The Football For All Awards Night is special because it focuses purely on those Volunteers who use Football as the hook to promote Good Relations, creating a fun, safe and inclusive culture throughout the local game”.
