Match Report
Davison’s Frudles Northern Ireland Women’s League
Sion Swifts continued on there winning ways in the Davison’s Frudles N Ireland Women’s League with a 5-0 victory over Moneyslane Ladies on Monday night courtesy of a quartet of goals from Lauren Brennan.
This wasn’t a vintage performance by any means from the young Swifts team but never-the-less they defended extremely well and created an abundance of chances to seal the win.
Played at the Mid-Ulster Arena on a bitterly cold evening Moneyslane started the game very well hemming the Sion team in their own half and forcing them to make some last ditch tackles. Fortunately for the Co Tyrone team the defensive quartet of Maria Quinn, Alana Mc Shane, Aimee Mc Ginley and the outstanding Angela Stevenson stood firm and goalkeeper Grace Quinn wasn’t troubled.
It took the Sion team fifteen minutes to find their feet on a somewhat bumpy surface but they started to create some half chances with some good interchanges of play. After 22 minutes the Swifts broke the deadlock when Claragh Connor, playing on the right, skipped past the opposing fullback and crossed low into the penalty area.
Lauren Brennan latched onto the ball, rounded the central defender and fired the ball goalward bound to give the Mournesiders the lead.
Sion added to this 5 minutes later when midfielder Amie Mc Cay lobbed the ball into the box which Niamh Mc Anenny headed down to Lauren
Brennan who duly half-volleyed the ball into the roof of the net. At this stage the Swifts dominated play with midfielders Zara O Hagan and Aime Mc Cay controlling the game. Niamh Mc Anenny got Sion’s third goal when she was played through by Angela Stevenson.
The centre forward sprinted onto the pass and without delay struck the ball from twenty yards which whizzed past the keeper.
The second half started off pretty much the same as the first with a determined Moneyslane side trying to reduce the deficit. They pushed an extra player up front and this created some problems for Sion although the outstanding Alana Mc Shane swept most threats aside playing as sweeper.
Grace Quinn was forced to react to some penetrating balls over the top of the defence but she was quick of her line and snuffed out any half chances.
Sion made three changes introducing Lena Toland, Jessica Moorehead and Louise Timoney and these changes made an immediate impact when Maria Quinn played the ball down the right to Lena Toland who in turn passed to Zara O Hagan who played a superb ball into the channel for Lauren Brennan who outpaced the defender and slotted past the keeper to give the centre forward her hat-trick.
Minutes later Aimee Mc Cay chipped a neat ball over the opposition’s defence which was met by Loiuse Timoney who controlled brilliantly and let fly with a superb left foot volley which cannoned off the upright. Moneyslane to their credit kept going right to the end but Lauren
Brennan added her fourth goal and Sion’s fifth in the dying minutes to give Sion a victory which leaves them joint top of the division with Lisburn.
